Gadget ON: HTC 8S Windows Phone 8 Review

HTC is one of the major player in Microsoft Mobile Platform. They also have products that run on Android Mobile OS. One of their latest offerings for Windows Phone 8 is the HTC 8S powered by Qualcomm® S4 1 GHz Dual-core, a 4 inch super LCD touch screen Gorilla® Glass and with 4 colors to choose from

When it comes to Windows Phone 8 Smartphones there are really limited choices, like the Nokia Lumia series, so the HTC 8S can be compared to Nokia Lumia 820.

Tech Specs of HTC 8S
  • 5 megapixel camera with auto focus LED flash, F2.8 aperture and 35mm lens, 720p video recording
  • Qualcomm® S4 1 GHz, Dual-core
  • Windows® Phone 8
  • 512MB ROM / 4GB Total storage, Expandable to 32GB Micro-SD card
  • Li-ion Polymer battery Capacity: 1700 mAh
  • Studio-quality sound with Beats Audio™ built in
  • Bluetooth® 3.1 / Wi-Fi®: IEEE 802.11 b/g/n
  • 4-inch super LCD touch screen Gorilla® Glass
The Hardware. When I first grasp the HTC 8S on my hand it feels just right, the 4-inch LCD Display is just about the right size of the screen for me, but I think the Ideal smartphone size for me would be 4.5-inch screen. The Screen is Clear and crisp, but when I tried to used it under direct sunlight it’s a bit hard to read the messages.

The design is simple and have solid build polycarbonate case with a size of 120.5 x 63 x 10.28 mm but its not made on one block of polycarbonate because the bottom part of the device can be opened where it hide’s the SIM and microSD card slots.

HTC 8S on hand - SIM and SD Slot

Opening this takes a little bit of force at first but once you get a hang of it, and know where to press and pull after that its going to be easy. I slot-in a 16GB micro SD card and a micro SIM card without any problems.

HTC 8S on hand - SIM right and SD Slot left

One of the Big changes of Windows Phone 8 devices from Windows Phone7 is the capability to add a storage card. As you can see on the picture above, the micro SD card is located on the left side and the micro SIM card is at the right side. Getting the cover back is an effortless to do, once it slot in place and hear a click sound then you are good to go.

HTC 8S on hand - Back View

At the back of the case, you can see the 5 megapixel camera with auto focus LED flash, F2.8 aperture and 35mm lens, and capable of taking a 720p video recording. Too bad though that this smartphone does not have a front camera that most of smartphones now have that can be use for video calls/conferencing.

HTC8S- thin

For the Charging/Sync port its located at the bottom, and at the top of the device is the power switch and the 3.5mm headphone port. On the right side of the device is where the camera button and the volume button is. The HTC 8S is so slim thus making is comfortable to seat on my hand.

 HTC 8S-music

Although this HTC 8S have slower clock speed (1GHz) and a small 512mb of RAM compared to  other Windows Phone 8 which are running dual-core, 1.5GHz Snapdragon chips, this device still responsive and fluid to touch commands, watching movies is no problem with display of WVGA (800 x 480), which translates to a modest density of 233 ppi.

Lumia and HTC

I’ve compared the HTC 8S with Nokia Lumia 710 and test which of them boots up faster, and it turns out that the HTC 8S boots up around 40seconds compared to Nokia Lumia 710 with 15 seconds boot up.

Performance. Having the HTC 8S for more than two weeks now as my main phone I can say that this device performs well so far, I haven’t got any issue on dropped calls or missing SMS. Playing games like NFS Hot Pursuit was enjoyable, I also tried other graphics intensive games and I'm happy with its performance. watching videos on this device is also great just don’t expect it to play 720p movies and make sure that the movie format is mp4.

HTC 8S-antutu benchmark  HTC 8S-antutu result  HTC 8S-antutu

As You can see from the results of Antutu benchmark it does not have a very impressive results, I’m sure that when you compared this to other Windows Phone devices it will be the one that have a low score.

The Windows Phone 8 is way far more better than its predecessor one of the major changes is in the Metro Style tiles, now the tiles occupy the whole screen which is more better. Not only that you can customized the size of the tiles and move it around the screen and arrange it on your own preferences unlike in Windows Phone 7 that the tiles are limited only to square.

You can read more about the features of Windows Phone 8 here

HTC added its own touch to the OS by including some apps. Like the Flashlight that features an SOS sign that uses the camera flash. Another one is Phone Enhancer, it lets you edit your images and enhance it. These apps is pre downloaded on the device.

Camera When it comes to the camera – the 5-mega pixel can shot decent images and records 720p videos. the 8S has a 35mm lens with f/2.8 aperture. But if you are looking a self portrait you are out of luck.

The autofocus can be triggered by tapping the screen, which supports tap-to-focus, you can use the camera button to take the pictures or tap and hold the screen will also do the job.

Beats Audio. now this features is for audiophiles, it works is every time you plug a wired headset this enhances the audio. But from my experience I think it just make the sound more louder compared when this feature is turn-off.

HTC 8S-music

Battery Performance. With its Li-ion Polymer battery Capacity: 1700 mAh and its not user replaceable. Based on my experience I can say that the battery is good for a day use, but make sure that you have a battery bank like Powa Battery Bank to insure of continued use.

My Experience and Say The HTC 8S is a worthy Windows Phone, with HTC’s sexy design and good balance of specifications. Sure! it only have a 1GHz chip and 5-megapixel camera but it can compete with other smartphones out there. With a price of Php 13,XXX in local stores this is a good buy already.

The lowdown, well it does not have a front camera and FM Radio, the battery is decent but if you are a heavy user this might be a disadvantage to you. For the apps and games well that is something really that Windows Phone is behind in terms of quantity compared to iOS and Android OS.

If you are looking for something new, HTC 8S is a great choice for smartphone not only the design is sexy there are also other colors to choose from. I think Windows Phone 8 is getting better and we can expect more feature's in the upcoming updates.

  7. What I love about HTC is its camera and video. There was one event when my blogger friend used her HTC phone to capture a video of David Pomeranz performance. Well, it turned out her copy of the video was better than my iPhone 5. LOL
